The University of Rochester's Economics Department ranks among the globe's premier institutions for contemporary economics education. Starting with its doctoral program's establishment in the late 1950s, Rochester has delivered intensive analytical instruction to international scholars.
Today, Rochester maintains its legacy of excellence in economic scholarship and teaching through faculty dedicated to producing top-tier research and offering exceptional training at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
PhD candidates must satisfy various coursework, research, and credit obligations to graduate. These specific prerequisites are outlined below, following the general sequence students experience throughout the program.
Prospective students need at least one year of calculus, plus one semester each of linear algebra and mathematical statistics. Those lacking any prerequisites must complete them during their initial graduate year. Additionally, all students must pass English proficiency assessments (oral and written) by their second year's second semester, though native English speakers may request exemption from the graduate advisor.
