Wayne State's Anthropology Ph.D. program equips scholars for both academic pursuits and professional practice in applied settings. The program excels in medical anthropology, organizational/business anthropology, urban anthropology, and historical archaeology, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across traditional subfields.
Doctoral candidates develop analytical frameworks and practical skills to address modern societal challenges, applying their expertise in academic and non-academic environments. Beyond the core Ph.D. curriculum, we offer specialized joint programs including Social Work and Anthropology (SWAN), Anthropology and Urban Sustainability (T-RUST), and an M.D./Ph.D. track through the School of Medicine.
We intentionally maintain small cohort sizes, selecting highly qualified candidates while guaranteeing funding and personalized mentorship within our tight-knit academic community. A particular point of pride is our success in supporting doctoral candidates from historically underrepresented backgrounds. Our dedication to student success, our Detroit location, and the international impact of our research collectively demonstrate the excellence of Wayne State's anthropology doctoral program.
