This Department provides instruction in fourteen distinct languages through various courses and programs. Beyond language acquisition and Global Studies, it emphasizes the cultures and literary traditions of both ancient Greece/Rome and contemporary societies, offering classes in native languages as well as English translations. Exploring foreign languages, literatures, and cultures not only broadens global awareness but also hones critical thinking abilities, improves English comprehension, and elevates writing proficiency. These linguistic and cultural studies serve as strong preparation for professional fields such as law, business, healthcare, education (secondary or higher), library sciences, and museum work. They equally benefit students targeting careers without graduate degree requirements - including government, publishing, tourism, and commerce - where intellectual capacity, communication abilities, and well-rounded liberal arts training are prized.
