This Department provides instruction in fourteen distinct languages through various courses and programs. Beyond language acquisition and Global Studies, it emphasizes the cultures and literary traditions of both ancient Greece/Rome and contemporary societies, offering classes in native languages as well as English translations. Exploring foreign languages, literatures, and cultures yields valuable global insights while refining critical thinking abilities, improving English comprehension, and elevating writing proficiency. These linguistic and cultural studies serve as strong preparation for professional fields like law, business, healthcare, education (secondary or higher), library science, and museum work. They also form an ideal foundation for careers not requiring advanced degrees, such as government service, publishing, tourism, and commerce - essentially any profession that values intellectual capacity, communication abilities, and a well-rounded liberal arts background.

Qualification Requirements

International applicants must complete the equivalent of a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree, including all state and external/internal examinations required for the degree. Some three-year general degrees (from Canada, India, Pakistan, France, Lebanon, etc.) may not be equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree. However, if you have completed an honors degree, additional undergraduate coursework beyond the three-year bachelor's degree, or a graduate degree, you may be considered for admission. As an international student, you are required to meet the university's English proficiency requirements for Undergraduate Admissions. Minimum scores of 79-80 TOEFL iBT and IELTS 6.5 are required for admission to Wayne State. If your native language is not English but you have been instructed in the English language, you are not necessarily exempt from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Test of Written English (TWE) and the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) requirements.
