Students have the option to enroll at either the Pullman or Vancouver campus, though all applications must be submitted through CollegeNet via the Pullman location. Washington State University's experimental psychology PhD program aims to develop exceptionally capable, creative, and accomplished researchers and educators in the field. Participants will customize their academic journey by focusing on one or more specialized domains. Upon completion, graduates will possess deep expertise in their chosen specialties, comprehensive knowledge of experimental psychology fundamentals, the ability to recognize important research questions, proficiency in diverse hypothesis generation and testing methods, and strong communication skills for sharing their findings. The program prepares graduates to excel in demanding academic roles involving research and teaching, as well as competitive research and applied positions across government agencies and private sector organizations.

Qualification Requirements

To merit consideration for the Experimental Program, the applicant must have completed at least 18 credits in Psychology and earned at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA. Applicants with less than these numbers will not be considered for admission regardless of circumstances.
For those who meet the above requirement, evaluation of the application is based on: undergraduate GPA (3.0 minimum), graduate GPA (if any), GRE scores (subject test is not required-Verbal plus Quantitative score usually averages around: If took GRE prior to August 1, 2011, score = 1160, If took GRE after August 1, 2011, score = 312.), transcripts, letters of recommendation, clinical, research and/or teaching experience, the variety and difficulty of coursework completed, with the expectation being that the student has completed a large number of upper-division courses both within and outside of the major, extracurricular activities and jobs related to psychology, and a demonstrated ability to function independently and responsibly.

Applicants with at least a B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) grade point Avg, or the equivalent in the last 60 graded semester (90 quarter) hours, from an accredited college or university, or at least a B grade point Avg in any graduate work from a recognized graduate school are eligible for admission to regular student status. Applicants with at least 12 semester hours of approved coursework from accredited graduate schools with at least a B grade point Avg are eligible for admission to regular student status.
