Sports engineering applies engineering concepts to address challenges in athletics. Key uses involve creating sports gear, constructing venues, evaluating player performance, establishing safety and performance guidelines, and crafting training aids. This field primarily focuses on external elements, particularly how competitors interact with their gear and surroundings. WSU's sports engineering research encompasses testing and modeling equipment performance, aerodynamic effects, surface friction, and protective gear. These applications span both warm-weather and cold-weather sports, including baseball, softball, soccer, football, hockey, and skiing.
