The most advanced academic qualification is either the Doctor of Science or Doctor of Philosophy (these titles are essentially interchangeable). This prestigious degree is granted after completing an intensive course of study and producing substantial innovative research, design, or developmental work. Doctoral programs are available across all disciplines covered by the department's faculty.
Prospective doctoral students qualify by successfully completing rigorous doctoral entrance examinations. The curriculum consists of primary coursework in the student's chosen specialization and supplementary studies in a complementary field. The MechE Graduate Office can provide specific deadlines for completing the qualifying examination.
The cornerstone of the doctoral program is the dissertation. This substantial original work must demonstrate meaningful research, development, or design advancements in its respective field. Students complete their dissertation and coursework under the guidance of a faculty advisor and a doctoral committee, which may include additional faculty members. The committee annually reviews the candidate's progress and ultimately determines readiness for a public thesis defense. While most students complete the doctoral program within three years after earning a master's degree, the duration varies significantly depending on the research topic.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
