The Engineering Mechanics (EM) graduate program at The University of Texas at Austin trains Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy candidates for careers in both academic and industrial settings. Alumni gain the skills to address complex challenges across diverse sectors such as aerospace, automotive, energy, production, and digital engineering. Our professors bring extensive knowledge in experimental, theoretical, and computational mechanics approaches.
The program provides specialized education and research opportunities culminating in either a Master of Science in Engineering or a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering mechanics. Applicants typically need a Bachelor of Science in engineering mechanics or a related engineering discipline. Students with science or mathematics backgrounds may also enroll, though they may require additional undergraduate coursework to meet program requirements.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
Application deadline: Summer and Fall: Dec. 1; Spring: Oct. 1
