Washington State University's Individual Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program (IIDP) caters to outstanding graduate students pursuing groundbreaking research that crosses traditional academic boundaries by combining knowledge from multiple fields to advance human progress. With guidance from WSU's graduate faculty and the Graduate School, these exceptional scholars create customized doctoral programs that merge disciplinary perspectives to generate novel insights into complex, cross-disciplinary challenges. Our goal is to cultivate top-tier researchers, inspiring educators, and visionary leaders whose creative approaches and solutions contribute meaningfully to global education and society.
Typically, students collaborate with a primary advisor and three faculty members representing at least two distinct WSU academic disciplines. This advisory committee guides the creation of the personalized doctoral curriculum and maintains close involvement to uphold rigorous academic standards. The proposed interdisciplinary program must satisfy key requirements: demonstrate doctoral-level significance, address research needs beyond any single graduate department's scope, and utilize available WSU academic resources for successful completion.
