The U.S. Department of State has classified Russian as a Critical Need Language, highlighting its significance in global communication and cultural exchange. With Russia's influential position in international politics and its widespread use across Eurasia and former Soviet territories, American professionals skilled in Russian language and cultural studies are increasingly sought after. Career opportunities requiring Russian proficiency span diverse fields such as global diplomacy, government, legal practice, commerce, scientific research, and defense.
Our department combines effective language instruction with study abroad programs in former Soviet regions, helping students achieve advanced language skills, cross-cultural awareness, and academic excellence. Numerous students pursue dual degrees, pairing Russian studies with subjects like history, business administration, life sciences, technology, and economic theory.
Beyond language instruction, our department promotes interdisciplinary learning throughout the college, fostering appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of former Soviet nations. This involves critically analyzing the historical impact of Russian and Soviet linguistic and cultural dominance across Eastern Europe, the Balkan states, Baltic nations, Caucasian regions, and Central Asian republics.
