The French Studies Department at Wake Forest University focuses on cutting-edge teaching and outstanding research. Our professors specialize in diverse fields including French and Francophone literature, cultural studies, film, and linguistics. We offer both major and minor programs, a French for Business concentration, and renowned faculty-led study abroad opportunities in Tours and Dijon.
Our faculty members are passionate educators and mentors dedicated to student achievement. Every professor, from seasoned veterans to newest hires, teaches across all levels—from introductory French to advanced major/minor courses and seminars. We value the progress of beginners as much as that of students in our highest-level classes, with student involvement and guidance central to our departmental mission.
We maintain that learning global languages and cultures defines a true liberal arts education. Language proficiency unlocks deeper comprehension of social, historical, and political developments within their original contexts. Specifically, our program helps students build language abilities and cross-cultural understanding to navigate the French-speaking world, sharpen critical analysis, and refine their thinking skills.
