The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers Master of Science degrees in civil engineering and environmental engineering, along with a Master of Engineering in civil engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering. The department also oversees a Master of Science program in environmental sciences and engineering. With 48 tenured or tenure-track professors and 21 emeritus faculty members—many still actively involved—the department boasts a strong academic team. This is further supplemented by 26 additional faculty, including professors of practice, research faculty, and administrative personnel, plus 18 supporting staff members. The faculty includes three National Academy of Engineering members, one National Academy of Science member, two National Academy of Construction members, and ten endowed professors. Fifteen professors have earned prestigious early-career awards from the National Science Foundation, while two hold PECASE Awards and seven have received Virginia's Outstanding Faculty Award. Department faculty have been widely recognized with national and regional honors for teaching, research, and community engagement.
