Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics (HFEE) focuses on designing jobs, machinery, operations, and workspaces to align with human capabilities and constraints. Professionals in this field, working within industrial or government settings, utilize existing human performance research to improve equipment design while also conducting new experiments to inform these developments. Core studies involve examining established research, design techniques, and assessment approaches relevant to HFEE. Specialized courses cover sensory ergonomics (human sensory strengths and weaknesses), physical ergonomics (biomechanics and work physiology), cognitive ergonomics (information processing), and macroergonomics (team dynamics). Students also engage in research across diverse HFEE applications such as sound-based communication, digital interfaces, workplace safety, instructional methods, and transit systems. The program highlights specialized coursework, electives tailored to individual interests, and hands-on lab research supervised by HFEE faculty.
