Our two-year Master of Science program combines advanced bioscience courses with an independent research project guided by a faculty advisor. The Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the School of Medicine offers both master's and doctoral programs, all aimed at equipping students for diverse careers in these fields. These programs blend classroom learning with research training under faculty mentorship. The M.S. program specifically prepares graduates for roles as laboratory technicians, managers, or research associates, while developing their potential as future bioscience researchers and educators.
The curriculum systematically builds students' expertise in contemporary bioscience, teaching them to analyze information and identify promising research directions.
This foundation then supports students in creating, executing, and evaluating experiments to explore their chosen research questions.
In addition to the general admission requirements of the VCU Graduate School, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements.
Applicants must have earned or expect a baccalaureate or equivalent degree and must have demonstrated a superior knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
Laboratory experience is strongly recommended.
Letters of recommendation and a letter summarizing the applicant's goals are required.
Foreign applicants who do not use English as their native language must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language examination.
