The Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (M.I.S.) program offers driven students a chance to craft a personalized academic path through graduate-level coursework, adopting a learner-focused educational model. Participants actively design their curriculum to achieve distinctive, academically challenging objectives within a well-structured, cross-disciplinary framework. The program enhances its interdisciplinary scope by permitting collaborations with accredited institutions. It empowers graduate students to create and fulfill tailored, student-directed programs that integrate multiple disciplines to accomplish specialized academic aims. The curriculum develops competencies applicable to diverse career paths or continued advanced education. Students achieve comprehensive understanding and integration of their chosen fields, culminating in a capstone research project that involves planning, executing, analyzing, and presenting findings aligned with their interdisciplinary academic objectives.
In addition to the general admission requirements of the VCU Graduate School, applicants who are proposing an individualized course of study must:
Schedule a preliminary advising interview with the director of the M.I.S. program to discuss academic goals and curricular proposals.
Articulate in the written statement of intent, including:
The applicant’s academic goal
How the M.I.S. degree program will facilitate the achievement of that goal
How a more traditional program does not meet those goals
Complete a preliminary curriculum proposal form identifying the specific course work that will support the academic goal articulated in the written statement of intent.
