The Master of Fine Arts in Theatre with a focus on pedagogy-performance is designed for theatre practitioners in the early to middle stages of their careers who aspire to teach at colleges or universities. This intensive two-year curriculum blends coursework in teaching methods, performance theory, dramaturgical studies, and critical analysis with hands-on production experience and teaching opportunities in undergraduate courses. The Performance Pedagogy program prepares graduates for academic careers both in university settings and across the wider landscape of theatre education. With over 100 successful alumni, the program has placed graduates in leadership roles within education departments at prominent LORT theaters and as faculty members at institutions such as Michigan State University, SUNY Albany, University of Pittsburgh, Boston University, University of Connecticut, Loyola Marymount University, among others.
Statement of Intent
Please submit your statement in the “Statement of Intent” section of the application. This 700-1000 word essay sheds light on the applicant’s practice and research interests. It should directly place the work being reviewed within the context of contemporary art/theoretical discourses while also addressing goals with respect to graduate school and what the applicant hopes to accomplish after VCU.

Three letters of recommendation from instructors or professional references in the applicant’s intended field of study
Curriculum vitae/resume
Writing Sample
This requirement is usually a research paper (preferably in Theatre) from previous undergraduate or MA coursework.
Interview
The department will contact selected applicants regarding an interview which may be conducted via zoom/skype, telephone, or in-person.
Auditions are no longer required.
