The Master of Arts in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness program takes an interdisciplinary approach, equipping students with both theoretical foundations and practical skills for careers in public or private sector security roles or advanced public policy studies. This curriculum addresses global and domestic security challenges, including terrorism threats like 9/11 and catastrophic events such as Hurricane Katrina. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, homeland security has emerged as a vital priority across all government levels and private industries. The L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs maintains that academic institutions must cultivate skilled professionals, policy experts, and knowledgeable leaders to ensure effective development of security policies in both public and private spheres.
