The Doctor of Philosophy in Community Research and Action (CRA) trains researchers focused on practical applications for careers in academia or policy within community studies that emphasize social justice. For those passionate about community psychology, urban development, program assessment, organizational transformation, health policies, preventive measures, urban evolution, social policies, or similar fields, the CRA program provides an academic environment to expand both theoretical understanding and practical expertise. Aligned with Peabody College's commitment to impactful research and education benefiting children, adolescents, and adults in communities, we equip students to employ action research methods that foster individual and institutional growth locally, nationally, and globally.
CRA builds upon Peabody's established community psychology program, embracing the discipline's shift toward interdisciplinary approaches. The curriculum covers qualitative and quantitative methodologies, assessment research, community frameworks, ethical considerations in society, and other community-focused subjects, while allowing students to explore courses across Vanderbilt University's diverse academic divisions.
Qualified applicants with bachelor’s or comparable non-U.S. degrees are eligible for admission to the Graduate School. Applications from international students with three-year bachelor’s degrees will also be considered.
The minimum acceptable score on the paper-based TOEFL is 570, and for the Internet-based test, 88. Many programs, however, require a considerably higher level of proficiency.
For IELTS, the minimum acceptable score will vary by program. In many cases, a score of at least 7.0 is desirable.
