The Blair School of Music stands as Vanderbilt University's central hub for exploring music both as a cultural pursuit and performance discipline. The institution attracts learners from more than thirty-five U.S. states and international locations. Its collaborative Teacher Education Program, offered with Vanderbilt's Peabody College of Education, leads to a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) with an integrated studies/teacher education focus—available in vocal or instrumental tracks over four years—followed by a one-year Master of Education (M.Ed.) program running from June through May. Prospective students apply to Peabody College during their final undergraduate year at Blair, with options to pursue K-12 certification in either instrumental/general or vocal/general music. This comprehensive program meets Tennessee's licensure standards while also preparing graduates for certification in other states.
The forward-thinking coursework blends rigorous musical training with essential studies in music history, theory, ear training, keyboard skills, conducting, and liberal arts. It incorporates both undergraduate and graduate-level education and psychology courses, supplemented by three practical training phases. The program culminates in a 15-week student teaching placement, with practicum opportunities spanning public and private schools, plus Blair's youth initiatives like Suzuki Strings, the Blair Children's Chorus, and Nashville Youth Symphony.
