This program blends Blair's expertise with Peabody College's focus on education and human development. Building upon the integrated studies major, it offers pathways to teacher certification in either instrumental or vocal/general music. Successful candidates complete the bachelor of music degree in four years, followed by a master of education from Peabody College during an intensive June-to-May fifth year. Students apply to Peabody's M.Ed. program during their final undergraduate year at Blair. The carefully structured curriculum meets Tennessee's K-12 licensure standards while also preparing graduates for certification in other states should they choose to pursue opportunities elsewhere.
The forward-thinking program combines rigorous musical training with academic coursework, featuring: intensive performance studies, comprehensive music theory and history, musicianship and keyboard skills, conducting, liberal arts requirements, specialized psychology and education courses (both undergraduate and graduate levels), three practical training experiences, and a student teaching component comprising at least 15 weeks in school settings. Practical training encompasses diverse environments including public and private schools, plus Blair Academy initiatives like Suzuki Strings, Blair Children's Chorus, and Nashville Youth Symphony.
