The Latin American studies program mandates proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or an indigenous Latin American language, along with core curriculum components and specialization in one of three tracks: 1) historical studies, 2) linguistic, literary, and artistic disciplines, or 3) social sciences. For the minor, students must complete 15 credit hours of approved Latin American-focused coursework, including Latin American Studies 2101 and achieving intermediate-level competency in a Latin American language. Those pursuing a Brazilian studies minor need to fulfill 15 credit hours of Brazil-related courses, encompassing LAS 2102 and Portuguese 2203.
All candidates for admission must present transcripts of work completed in high school.
