This interdisciplinary major, a collaboration between the Department of German, Russian and East European Studies and the European Studies Program, focuses on developing proficiency in German language while exploring the literature and cultural traditions of German-speaking areas within contemporary Europe. The curriculum cultivates linguistic abilities, analytical thinking, and intercultural understanding through dynamic partnerships that highlight the significance of German-speaking cultures both in Europe and worldwide.
Coursework examines German literary and cultural traditions through a pan-European lens, offering insights into both European/German viewpoints on international matters and external perceptions of European and German identities. Participants benefit from cross-disciplinary approaches incorporating history, philosophy, political science, music, and visual arts. To foster intellectual growth, courses maintain small class sizes with emphasis on dialogue and participation. Numerous extracurricular activities—including guest lectures, discussion panels, informal lunch seminars, and film screenings—create additional avenues for cultural immersion. The program also features multiple international study opportunities.
All candidates for admission must present transcripts of work completed in high school.
