Students pursuing a Master of Music degree can gain in-depth expertise in their chosen specialization through a combination of research, classroom learning, and personalized instruction while developing professional competencies and leadership abilities. The program offers four distinct tracks: Piano Performance and Pedagogy, Guitar Performance, Voice Performance, and Choral Conducting.
The Piano Performance and Pedagogy track uniquely combines advanced piano training with teaching methodology, distinguishing it from programs that separate these disciplines. This curriculum addresses the growing need for highly skilled piano educators who possess both performance excellence and formal teaching qualifications. Participants gain hands-on experience through the USU Youth Conservatory, which offers piano education to children and teenagers aged 4 to 18.
The Guitar Performance specialization enables students to learn from accomplished faculty with diverse performance backgrounds. Recognized by Jazz Guitar Online among the nation's top 25 jazz guitar programs, this track mandates two recitals (each worth 2 credits) as part of degree requirements.

Choral Conducting students concentrate on group performance mastery, advanced conducting methods, repertoire studies, and customized research aligned with their professional goals. This specialization requires conducting recitals and/or research presentations.
Voice Performance students work with nationally renowned faculty, preparing for careers in both performance and teaching. The program provides performance opportunities with USU Opera and Utah Festival Opera, along with masterclasses featuring distinguished artists like Kelli O'Hara, Dr. Scott McCoy, and Libby Larsen. More details about vocal studies are available through USU's Voice Performance and Choral Education program pages.
