The Department of History has earned distinction from the American Historical Association as one of only 12 exceptional history programs in the U.S. and Canada, honored for its exemplary teaching and academic leadership. The graduate program draws scholars from throughout the nation and internationally. With an intentionally small cohort of about 12 new students annually, each graduate receives personalized attention. Master's candidates benefit from not having to share resources or faculty mentorship with doctoral students.
History faculty members offer diverse expertise spanning multiple historical eras and global regions, with special strengths in environmental history, religious studies, and Western U.S. studies. The MA program mandates foreign language competency, while the MS degree allows students to substitute scientific or technological research components for language requirements. During their first year, students collaborate with their advisory committee to create a customized course of study.
