The Urban Historical Studies focus merges historical methodologies with social science perspectives to examine urban development, institutions, and communities. This track caters to students aiming to pursue an interdisciplinary Urban Studies doctoral program or related advanced degrees after earning their Master of Arts. A thesis forms an essential component of this specialization.
The History Department provides both M.A. and Ph.D. programs that equip graduates for professional paths in education, historical scholarship, and positions within archives, cultural institutions, museums, libraries, and public service. The department features diverse course offerings spanning various regions, time periods, and thematic concentrations. At the master's level, students can choose among four pathways: (1) a comprehensive History degree, (2) a Public History concentration for museum, archival, or preservation careers, (3) a dual Master of Arts/Master of Library and Information Science program, or (4) an Urban Historical Studies specialization designed for future doctoral candidates in Urban Studies or Urban History. The History Department's graduate programs develop skills for careers in education, historical investigation, and work with archival collections, heritage organizations, cultural institutions, and government agencies.
