Welcome to the University of Washington's History Graduate Program. We specialize in educating future historians who contribute to academic knowledge while connecting with wider audiences through teaching and public engagement. Our program has over 50 MA and PhD candidates exploring diverse historical fields, supported by faculty with extensive expertise. We encourage cross-disciplinary and comparative historical methods, allowing students to collaborate with faculty across multiple disciplines and university departments. Both professors and graduate students actively participate in digital history initiatives that enhance research, education, and public awareness of historical scholarship.
Our Russian and Central Asian history studies benefit from partnerships with other UW programs, particularly the Jackson School's Russian, East European and Central Asian Program (REECAS). REECAS organizes an annual Pacific Northwest conference for scholars and graduate students, typically in April, featuring a notable keynote speaker. Additionally, REECAS publishes the Donald W. Treadgold Papers, a respected occasional paper series showcasing cutting-edge research on the regions referenced in its title, recognized both nationally and internationally.
