Utah State University's Department of Special Education and Counseling regularly earns recognition as one of the nation's top 20 education programs from U.S. News and World Report. Graduates with special education degrees from USU are in high demand among school districts throughout Utah and nationwide. The university boasts a perfect employment rate for special education graduates, with numerous students securing positions before completing their studies. The department provides distinctive learning and professional development options for those pursuing careers with children and adolescents who have disabilities. The curriculum equips students to assist individuals with varying levels of disabilities, from mild to severe, including young children with special needs. Practical experience opportunities are available through partnerships with local school districts and on-campus initiatives. The special education program is available on the Logan Main Campus through a conventional teacher preparation track. It's also accessible online statewide for working professionals through the OPTT (Online Teacher Preparation Program).
On the Logan Main Campus, many students combine the special education major with Elementary Education, enabling graduates to qualify for dual certification in both Elementary/Early Childhood Education and Special Education. Students earn either a first or second Bachelor of Science by fulfilling all major requirements. Those pursuing a Bachelor of Arts must additionally demonstrate competency in one or more foreign languages. The OPTT (Online Practical Teacher Training) program also offers pathways toward earning a master's degree.
