This program offers students greater career versatility by enabling them to transition between special education and elementary education roles. Holding dual certification prepares educators to effectively support students with special needs, who are often present in general education classrooms. Many states mandate that special education instructors possess either elementary or secondary education credentials. Notably, Utah State University's special education graduates achieve 100% employment rates after completing their studies. The curriculum blends coursework from both elementary and special education disciplines, culminating in dual certification for teaching grades 1-8 (with particular strength in grades 1-6 under No Child Left Behind guidelines). Participants develop subject matter expertise through elementary education courses while acquiring specialized instructional methods for diverse learners via the special education curriculum. The Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services ranks among the top 10 education colleges nationally for external research funding.
