Utah State University's Department of Special Education and Counseling regularly earns recognition as one of the nation's top 20 education programs from U.S. News and World Report.
School districts throughout Utah and nationwide actively recruit USU graduates with special education degrees. The university boasts perfect employment rates for its special education graduates, with numerous students securing positions prior to graduation.
This department provides exceptional learning and professional development opportunities for aspiring educators of children and adolescents with disabilities. The curriculum trains future educators to support individuals across the disability spectrum, from mild to severe cases, including young children with special needs. Participants gain practical experience through collaborations with area schools or university-based initiatives.
The special education program is available both as an on-campus teacher certification program in Logan and through a statewide online option (OPTT - Online Teacher Preparation Program) designed for working para-professionals or certified teachers in Utah.
On the Logan campus, many students combine special education with elementary education, enabling graduates to qualify for dual certification in both special education and elementary/early childhood education.
Completion of all major requirements leads to a BS degree, while BA candidates must additionally demonstrate foreign language proficiency. The OPTT program also offers pathways for graduate-level study.
