The student, along with their major professor and graduate committee, designs a customized study plan and research project tailored to their individual academic goals. The graduate committee should be formed and operational before the student completes 12 semester hours of coursework. Approval and submission of the master of science program must occur by the conclusion of the student's second semester in animal science graduate studies. This committee also evaluates whether the student demonstrates sufficient progress to qualify for master's degree candidacy or continuation in a doctoral program by the end of their third semester after enrollment.
Students may focus their studies and thesis/dissertation work in specialized areas such as breeding, food science and human nutrition, animal physiology, meat science, reproduction, or wool science. Complementary courses are offered in related fields including agricultural economics, biochemistry, microbiology, range management, genetics, statistics, and other disciplines aligned with the student's interests. In some instances, interdisciplinary research projects combining animal science with other departments may be arranged.
