The Department of Plant Sciences boasts faculty with wide-ranging specializations across pest control (including weed science and plant pathology), horticulture (covering plant propagation, turf management, and landscape design), and agricultural advancement (encompassing plant genetics, bioenergy crops, forage studies, cultivar development, irrigation strategies, and ecological assessment). While most faculty operate from the primary Laramie location, we maintain substantial operations at Research and Extension Centers in Lingle, Powell, and Sheridan. Our department takes pride in our personalized approach to graduate training, viewing it as a partnership between instructors and learners. We hold both ourselves and our students to rigorous standards, believing this collaborative model is essential for shaping future scientific leaders.
Graduate scholars are integral members of our department, participating actively in teaching, research, and outreach initiatives. We emphasize disseminating research findings through multiple platforms, requiring students to share their work at extension events or similar forums when suitable. Many graduate candidates also prepare extension publications, gaining crucial communication skills applicable to any professional trajectory. These experiences in writing and public speaking cultivate transferable abilities that serve students throughout their careers.
We aim to deliver hands-on training that highlights the interconnectedness of scientific fields necessary for ecologically sound crop production. Sustainable agriculture, in our view, employs methods that satisfy current demands without jeopardizing future generations' resources. Implementing such practices demands comprehensive understanding of their systemic impacts within agricultural ecosystems.
