The Plant Biology and Conservation Program equips students for leadership roles in botanical research and plant preservation. As biodiversity faces increasing threats worldwide and the risk of mass extinctions looms, this program cultivates skilled botanists capable of tackling these urgent challenges.
A collaborative effort between Northwestern University (NU) and the Chicago Botanic Garden (CBG), the program provides both master's and doctoral degrees through Northwestern's Graduate School. Students learn from NU faculty and CBG researchers across diverse disciplines such as conservation biology, genetics, plant ecology, evolutionary studies, environmental policy, soil science, geology, economic botany, and anthropology. Numerous CBG courses are held at the Garden's facilities.
