The University of Wyoming's Bachelor of Science in Microbiology is a cross-departmental program that brings together more than 20 faculty microbiologists from the Colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, and Health Sciences for collaborative teaching, advising, and research. Each student benefits from personalized academic guidance from faculty mentors and can earn their degree through either the College of Agriculture or the College of Arts and Sciences. The program's flexible curriculum helps students fulfill their University Studies Program requirements while building a strong foundation in core scientific disciplines like biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, physics, and mathematics. The microbiology coursework covers fundamental topics through General Microbiology along with specialized courses highlighting microbial diversity and practical applications. Students can further tailor their education by selecting elective microbiology courses aligned with their career aspirations. Additionally, the program offers hands-on research opportunities, either in laboratories or field settings, supervised by faculty members.
Microbiology focuses on microscopic organisms invisible to the naked eye, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, algae, and subcellular entities like viruses, prions, and viroids. This scientific field encompasses various specialized areas that showcase microbial diversity (such as bacteriology, virology, and mycology) as well as applied disciplines like medical microbiology, immunology, microbial ecology, food microbiology, industrial microbiology, and biotechnology. Foundational sciences like biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics also play crucial roles in microbiology. Historically, microbiology has contributed significantly to advancements in biochemical and genetic research, disease prevention, food production, and the development of commercial products that enhance our daily lives.
