Working alongside various academic departments at UW-Milwaukee, SOIS enables students to pursue dual Master's degrees simultaneously—one in Library and Information Science (MLIS) and another in a specialized field. The MLIS portion of these combined programs consists of 30 credit hours from SOIS coursework, featuring 12 credits of core MLIS classes. Students choose the remaining 18 MLIS credits from the School's curriculum based on their coordinated degree objectives. This 54-credit dual degree program equips Music History and Literature students for careers as music librarians.
Although GRE scores aren't mandatory for applicants, those aiming for UWM's Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship or considering further graduate studies after their UWM master's degree should complete these tests either before or early in their program.
All incoming and transfer graduate students must complete diagnostic assessments in both music history and music theory prior to their initial semester at UWM, with exceptions made only under special circumstances. Students cannot advance beyond their first year of graduate studies without completing these exams. The results help faculty assess whether students can enroll in graduate-level courses or need to address foundational knowledge gaps first.
