The School of Education provides an interdisciplinary PhD program where students can specialize in various fields, including Adult, Continuing, and Higher Education Leadership; Art Education; Curriculum and Instruction; Educational Administration; Exceptional Education; Mathematics Education; Multicultural Studies; or Social Foundations of Education.

This program allows students to combine their chosen specialization with broader educational studies, particularly in urban education. With the exception of Multicultural Studies, each specialization is department-based, requiring students to meet specific admission and curriculum criteria. Successful completion results in the specialization being noted on the student's academic transcript.

Each specialization enables doctoral candidates to focus on distinct academic areas. For instance, Adult, Continuing, and Higher Education Leadership concentrates on leadership and governance in urban adult education institutions. Educational Administration examines leadership and governance in urban school systems. Curriculum and Instruction allows focus on specific subjects (like reading), educational levels (such as early childhood), general domains (including curriculum theory), or specialized topics (such as instructional improvement strategies). Exceptional Education offers concentrations in specific departmental focus areas (like disabilities) or interdisciplinary interests.
