A PhD represents the most advanced academic qualification awarded by universities, characterized by its focus on innovative scholarship through original research. Our sociology doctoral program equips graduates for academic careers in teaching and research at higher education institutions, along with analytical and policy-oriented roles across diverse professional environments. PhD candidates cultivate specialized knowledge of social structures and processes while mastering both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
The foundational curriculum for doctoral students establishes comprehensive grounding in sociological principles, investigative methods, and data interpretation, complemented by specialized coursework and faculty guidance to deepen understanding in selected sociological fields. Students concentrate their studies within two primary domains: Social Stratification (encompassing race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status) and Institutional Systems (including government, education, family structures, criminal justice, labor markets, organizations, healthcare, scientific communities, and cultural phenomena). The Department supports students in refining sophisticated competencies in both scholarly investigation and pedagogical techniques.
