Air pollution meteorology examines weather patterns near the Earth's surface, focusing on how atmospheric conditions influence air contaminants and vice versa. Professor Jon Kahl's team investigates the effectiveness of the widely-used Pasquill stability classification system, weather-related impacts on hazardous air pollutants in Mexico, models for tracking far-reaching atmospheric pollution movement, satellite-based techniques for detecting airborne particles, and approaches for analyzing and predicting sudden wind bursts.

Qualification Requirements

Students seeking admission to the PhD in Atmospheric Science degree program must meet all UWM Graduate School requirements. An earned Master of Science degree is not a prerequisite for admission, however, it is expected that most applicants will have an earned master of science degree in atmospheric science or a closely-related discipline. Applicants are required to submit a Reason Statement. Statements are used to determine the appropriateness of your educational and professional goals and serves as an example of your ability to express yourself in writing. Your reason statement should include:

your reasons for pursuing graduate study
your specific background interests and background in the field
any relevant skills or training you've acquired
any academic awards or honors you have received
the name(s) of faculty members with whom your research interests most closely align

You must have attended this institution for at least one year and the degree was earned at an institution in the United States, and you have lived and worked continuously in the U.S since earning the degree. Cambridge English: Advanced / Cambridge English Proficiency C1 level or higher. TOEFL IBT (not Home Edition) - 79 120, IELTS - 6.5 9.0.
