The African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS) Ph.D. program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee provides two specialization tracks: 1) political economy and public policy, and 2) African and Diaspora cultures and societies. The curriculum requires coursework in both areas to ensure comprehensive exposure to key humanities and social science disciplines within black studies. Our distinguished faculty brings diverse scholarly perspectives spanning political economy, public policy, cultural studies, economic analysis, historical research, literary criticism, folklore, international relations, and sociological-psychological investigation. African and African Diaspora Studies as a field systematically explores the lived experiences and future possibilities of African peoples and their descendants throughout history and geography. This doctoral program intentionally connects local, national, and global contexts to cultivate insights that empower graduates to make meaningful contributions to their communities. UWM's African and African Diaspora Studies Ph.D. recognizes that our increasingly globalized world will create growing demand for Africana scholarship and specialists across academic and professional spheres in the 21st century.
