The Latin American and Caribbean History program at UW-Madison boasts a prestigious legacy dating to the late 1930s, when initial courses in this field were introduced. Our current network of Latin American and Caribbean scholars includes History department members along with numerous researchers connected to UW-Madison's Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program - a Title VI National Resource Center partnered with UW-Milwaukee's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
History professors focusing on Latin America or the Caribbean concentrate their research on various themes: racial dynamics and nationalism in the Atlantic world, the African diaspora, Brazilian history, global environmental studies, animal research, development economics, medical and scientific history in the Atlantic region and African diaspora, cultural politics, intellectual history, global democratic socialism, socioeconomic disparities, and U.S.-Latin American interactions. Their collective work shares a transnational historical perspective.
