The French MA and PhD programs feature an exceptional faculty specializing in all aspects of French and Francophone literature and culture. The curriculum balances comprehensive coverage with focused expertise, leveraging the faculty's diverse strengths. Graduates with a Wisconsin PhD gain the capacity to teach both specialized research topics and the broader French literary canon.

Our graduate program provides comprehensive preparation for teaching and research across French and Francophone literature, literary history, critical theory, film studies, gender and queer studies, romance philology, and language pedagogy. With our extensive faculty offering regular graduate courses in all disciplines, MA students can complete coursework within two years, while PhD candidates can fulfill their course requirements within two years post-MA. The program structure enables qualified students to earn their MA in three semesters and complete all PhD requirements (except the dissertation) within four additional semesters.
