Saint Louis University's Master of Arts in English program offers comprehensive academic preparation across diverse literary disciplines, rhetoric, and composition studies.
The non-thesis track for the M.A. in English requires 30 credit hours post-bachelor's degree. Students choosing the article alternative can submit a refined, publishable-length paper to fulfill 3 of these credits, while the thesis pathway allows substituting a thesis project for 6 credits. All three program variations typically span two years.
Prospective SLU instructors in the M.A. program must complete a writing pedagogy course, alongside mandatory classes in literary research methodologies, critical theory, and coursework covering four of five designated academic areas.
Upon completing their studies, candidates undergo a 90-minute oral examination. Those selecting the essay or thesis options develop their focus with faculty guidance, with final projects evaluated by a three-member faculty committee.
