The department provides both an upper-level undergraduate class (648) and a graduate-level seminar (908) in this field. These classes explore education within its societal framework, analyzing connections between education and political/economic structures, education's role in cultural transmission and social advancement, school organization, and learning outcomes. Students can supplement these with courses on organizational structures, social hierarchy, statistical methods, and more. Cross-departmental options are available through Educational Policy Studies, Educational Leadership, and Curriculum departments. Faculty expertise spans diverse topics including education's impact on social stratification (race, class, gender intersections), education-health connections throughout life, and how educational policies may lessen or worsen student inequalities. Beyond regular coursework and department seminars, participation in the Interdisciplinary Training Program's education science workshops is highly encouraged.
