The doctoral program provides advanced studies in literature, folklore, and philology. Admission prerequisites align with the Master's degree standards in Scandinavian Studies, specializing in literature, regional studies, or philology as applicable. New graduate students must meet with the primary graduate advisor when starting at UW-Madison. During this consultation, they'll review the student's educational objectives and professional aspirations to determine the most suitable faculty member to serve as committee chair.

Qualification Requirements
Applicants should have an MA in a related field.
Applicants should have a BA degree from an accredited institution in a field of humanities or social studies.
Applicants are expected to have preparation equivalent to an undergraduate major in Scandinavian Studies at UWMadison and should either have taken three years of a Scandinavian language or must demonstrate (by examination) equivalent competence in one Scandinavian language or Finnish. A GPA of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) is required for admission, students with a GPA below 3.25 but above 3.00 may be considered for admission on probation. A writing sample (in English or a Scandinavian language) is required.

A minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two years of work) or a master's degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required. Applicants from an international institution must demonstrate strong academic achievement comparable to a 3.00 for an undergraduate or master's degree.
