The program provides Master of Arts degrees in Portuguese & Spanish, along with a Doctor of Philosophy majoring in Portuguese & Spanish. Students can also pursue a doctoral minor in either Spanish or Portuguese, requiring nine graduate-level credits.
Our integrated curriculum covers Portuguese and Spanish languages, literature, and linguistics, equipping master's and PhD graduates for careers in teaching and research. Faculty research advances knowledge in these fields, while a rotating selection of courses ensures comprehensive coverage across all disciplines. Instruction is delivered entirely in Portuguese and Spanish.
Consistently ranked among the nation's top programs, our Portuguese & Spanish graduate studies typically award 20-25 teaching assistantships annually. The department regularly offers a complete range of courses exploring Portuguese, Brazilian, and Luso-African literature, culture, and linguistics.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
