The Department of Spanish and Portuguese's Ph.D. program delves into the vibrant disciplines of Latin American, Luso-Brazilian, Latinx, and Iberian studies, examining their diverse linguistic, literary, and cultural traditions through various scholarly lenses. This doctoral program promotes interdisciplinary connections with areas like African American Studies, Anthropology, Comparative Literature, Film and Media Studies, Art History, Medieval Studies, Philosophy, and Early Modern Studies (previously Renaissance Studies), alongside cutting-edge interdisciplinary domains such as Race, Indigeneity, and Transnational Migration; Gender and Sexuality Studies; and Digital Humanities. Typically spanning five to six years, the program structure includes: two initial years for coursework and language requirements, a third year focused on comprehensive exams and dissertation proposal development, and the final two to three years dedicated to dissertation writing. Teaching responsibilities occur between years two and four, with pedagogy training in the second year and language instruction in subsequent years, while literature course assistance is provided when possible. The first two years and dissertation fellowship year are teaching-free.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
