The Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides a Ph.D. program in Spanish, specializing in Spanish, Spanish-American, or Chicano/Latino literature and cultural studies. This curriculum combines traditional studies of periods and genres with training in literary theory, linguistics, sociohistorical analysis, and cultural criticism. Rather than producing narrowly focused experts, the Department aims to develop well-rounded scholars familiar with diverse fields that complement their primary discipline. Consequently, Ph.D. candidates are advised to enroll in courses beyond departmental offerings. Students may pursue graduate emphases in Comparative Literature, Critical Theory, or Women's Studies, or create customized study plans (such as film or history) with approval from their doctoral advisory committee. The Department maintains a longstanding dedication to teaching excellence, both in its faculty's work and in preparing its graduates for academic careers.
