As one of the longest-running and most respected programs in its field across the U.S., the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology (HSMT) brings together faculty from both History and Medical History & Bioethics departments. Together, we provide comprehensive expertise covering diverse regions including Europe, the U.S., Africa, and the Caribbean, spanning historical periods from medieval times to modern eras, and encompassing disciplines from physical and biological sciences to medical and technological studies.
Our HSMT graduate program primarily serves PhD candidates, with financial support exclusively available for doctoral-track students. We do, however, accept applications from master's degree seekers who have secured external funding or can self-fund their studies. Medical professionals with doctoral qualifications can pursue an MA in History of Medicine. Additionally, through collaboration with the School of Medicine & Public Health's Medical Scientist Training Program, students have the opportunity to complete a combined MD/PhD degree alongside their HSMT studies.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
