The Freshwater and Marine Sciences (FMS) Graduate Program provides master's and doctoral degree options specializing in aquatic sciences. With an interdisciplinary approach, the program customizes each student's curriculum to combine water-related studies with complementary scientific fields. Participants receive guidance from faculty across multiple schools, including Letters & Science, Engineering, Agricultural and Life Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.
UW-Madison maintains global prominence in limnology and aquatic ecology research. Established in 1962 as an oceanography and limnology initiative, the FMS Program unites diverse academic disciplines to explore aquatic systems—their formation, ecosystems, phenomena, and human interactions.
The program prioritizes limnological research while recognizing the interconnected nature of freshwater and marine science. Students can concentrate specifically on limnology or marine environments, or examine shared processes between these aquatic systems.
Each participant works with an advisory committee of at least five faculty members, including their primary advisor, to create personalized academic plans. This committee assists with designing coursework, research projects, and professional development objectives.
