Legal studies is an undergraduate degree program offered by the College of Letters & Science. This program aims to deliver a broad liberal arts education that examines legal theories, systems, and institutions from multiple academic perspectives. Through the curriculum, students engage with law as a complex social construct - studying its historical development, societal roles, underlying principles, and broader impacts. While the major provides valuable insights for pre-law students, its primary purpose isn't professional preparation for law school, but rather a multidisciplinary exploration of legal concepts. The program encourages critical thinking about fundamental legal questions through diverse academic lenses.
The coursework is organized around five key areas: Legal Systems and Structures, Patterns of Legal Stability and Change, Law in Social Contexts, Cultural Dimensions of Law, and Theoretical Foundations of Law.
