The French studies program at UWMadison provides learners with immersive cultural and literary education about Francophone regions through engaging classroom instruction and supplementary activities. These include the French House, a residential immersion facility and cultural hub, plus various French and Francophone cultural events throughout Madison.

Prospective French majors or certificate candidates join the program at their appropriate skill level based on language ability. Those with prior French language background should contact Testing and Evaluation Services to schedule a placement exam.

Most UWMadison French degree seekers or certificate candidates fulfill their academic requirements by blending on-campus coursework with study abroad opportunities through university-approved programs.
